Fluoroboric acid (hydrofluoroboricacid ; tetrafluoroboric acid)

Molecularformula:HBF4
Molecular weight: 87.83

Property: Colorless transparent liquid, strong acid which can only exist in aqueous solution. Technical product is generally solution containing 42 to 48%. 42% solution's relative density is 1.32, and that of 48% solution is 1.37. Fluoroboric acid is stable in concentrated solution and will begain to decompose if heated to 130°C. It can mixedly solve with water or alcohol. In aqueous solution it will slowly decompose to HBF3OH; when touched the surface of glass, its stability will decline gradually. The degree of hydrolysis of 0.047M fluoroboric acid solution will increase fro 20.6% to 72.6% if kept in glass window for over 32 days. It is highly corrosive, but it will not corrode glass at normal temperature. It can react with metal elements, metal fluorides, oxides, hydrates or carbonates and produce fluoroboric salts. Toxic!

Use: Used as the cleaning agent and corrodent for the metal surface oxides and silicate film, to clean aluminum and alloy before they are plated. 2.5% solution is used for electrolyzing and polishing pure aluminum, removing weld flux from metal, and as the re-washing liquid for electroplating elements; used as the catalyst, antiseptics, chemical reagent for alkylation and polymerization, as the raw materials for making various fluoroboric salts.
